Beyond
the city limits, in the Buenos Aires province, you can find
many interesting and entertaining attractions. You can reach
these attractions by train or by bus usually more or less within
an hour. One such popular weekend getaway is located on the
riverside suburb of Tigre. It is perfect point of departure
for exploring the Delta del Paraná and for visiting the
historic Isla Martín García. This is also the
departure point for passenger ferries that cross the river to
Carmelo and Nueva Palmira, Uruguay.

During the Argentina's struggle
for of independence, the island of Isla Martín García
was the site of an important naval battle and later for a penal
settlement. Visitors can take one of several scenic tours that
offer an opportunity to take in the beauty of the island.
Tigre and The Delta
Prominant
mansions are some of the notable features of the Tigre. A stroll
down the streets followed by a picnic in the park is an ideal
plan for a memorable visit. One of Tigre's best attraction is
the Puerto de Frutos or the fruit port with a wonderful variety
of exotic fruit for sale and also a big weekend crafts fair
with good food at its restaurants.
The main channel through
the Delta is the Riío Paraná de las Palmas. The
town of Tigre is at the convergence of the Río Luján
and the Río Tigre, beyond which is the 2000-km maze of
waterways that constitutes the Delta.
Isla Martín García
On route to the historic
Martin Garcia you can navigate the densely forested channels
of the Delta providing for an adventurous trek. Just south of
the city of Carmelo, the island is known for its prison camp.
Four Argentine presidents were held in custody here, and the
Servicio Penintenciario of Buenos Aires province still uses
it for prisoners near the end of their terms.
Marin Garcia's main attraction
is its historic buildings. Four baterías, two on each
side of the muelle which is a passenger pier, protect the perimeter
of the town, and a lighthouse overlooks the cluster of buildings.
Other interesting buildings to visit are the ruins of the former
naval barracks (Cuartel), the Museo de la Isla and the Casa
de Ciencias Naturales, a bakery dating from 1913 (Panadería
Rocio) and the extraordinarily decorative theater (CineTeatro),
once a house occupied by Darío. At the northwestern end
of the island vessels can no longer approach the Puerto Viejo
(old port) because sediments have clogged the anchorage.
At present Martin Garcia
is more of a historical monument with nature reserves and serves
as recreational retreat from the bustle of the capital.
