 Iglesia
de San Francisco
The
church has two towers by the entrance. One of them is a historical
monument for it houses the bell of the freedom which sounded out
the call of independence on 25th May 1809.
It possesses a notable mudejar
paneled ceiling executed in cedar wood that continues to where
the adjacent chapels cross the main nave.
Embedded to the atrium of the church is the neo-classical arcade
of San Francisco.

Metropolitan Cathedral
The
Metropolitan Cathedral is the most significant religious monument
in Sucre. Construction began in 1559 and was finally completed
in 1712. The result was a mixture of
renaissance style and mixed baroque styles of architecture. Of
interest are the statues of the twelve apostles and four patron
saints of Sucre. A valuable collection
of paintings by Montufar, representing the martyrdom of the apostles,
decorate the walls.
Iglesia de San Miguel
The
Church of San Miguel was originally a Jesuit church built in the
16th century reopened after 120 years. It contains carved and
painted ceilings, pure-white walls gold and silver altar. The
church contains some very nice paintings and sculptures.
Chapel of the Virgin
of Guadalupe
The chapel was built in 1617
and houses the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, painted by Fray
Diego de Ocaña in 1601. Over the centuries the image has
been covered by offerings from innumerable devotees. The painting
was reinforced with a plate of gold and silver, representing the
mantle of the Virgin in 1748.
Iglesia de la Merced
Built in the 16th century
the interior of la Merced is extreamly beautiful with he altarpiece
of the main altar, carved in cedar and gilded with a gold leaf.
This church exhibits several paintings of Melchor Peréz
de Holguín as well as sculptures of other artists.
Convento de San Felipe
Neri
Massive
17th century church and monastery, built in the neoclassical style
with beautiful courtyards and cloisters. The church was originally
constructed of stone, but was later covered with a layer of stucco.
It houses a nice painting of the Last Supper hangs amongst others.
