CITY OVERVIEW
Sucre
is Bolivia's most beautiful city.
Set in a valley surrounded by low mountain, it enjoys a mild and
comfortable climate nearly as appealing as that of Cochabamba.
Bolivia divides its bureaucracy between multiple capitals. Although
La Paz has usurped most of the governmental power, the supreme
court still convenes in Sucre.

This
small, old-fashioned university city is full of young people,
which gives the city a nice energetic feel to it. Local inhabitants
love to spend their days sitting in the main plaza, walking through
the numerous parks, or visiting with friends in the multitude
of bars and cafes located throughout
the city. Adding to the colonial charm of the city itself are
the customs and dress of the indigenous people who live in this
region of Bolivia. Located throughout the city and in the many
nearby small villages, you will find fascinating markets, where
it is possible to buy some very nice items. Locals and visitors
are attracted to these markets where food, textiles and other
products are sold in barter fashion. Nearby is Potosi, which was
one of the most important silver mining centers in the world with
the largest and richest population in Latin America. It is an
integral part of Bolivian history.
Sucre houses many museums and
a beautiful cemetery. It is also one of the largest producer of
the typical Bolivia hats. Just outside Sucre there is a cement
quarry where they have found dinosaur tracks. Around Sucre you
can also walk some Inca trails. The monuments
and existing works of art in Sucre are of superlative quality.
Numerous museums have been established
in Sucre to house the art and relics of the pre-Columbian, colonial
and post-colonial eras, and some of its many churches have been
renovated to reflect their former glory. The city remains a center
of learning and both Sucre and its university enjoy their reputations
as focal points of liberal and progressive thought within the
country. Its worth spending at least a few days absorbing the
city's pleasant atmosphere, attractions and pace of life.
