NEED TO KNOW:
SA Heredia
Living as a pedestrian
-
Street and avenue numbers are found sporadically
on the sides of corner buildings. Keep on looking, you’ll
find one!
-
To find out what’s north, east,
west, and south, look for a church entrance since this one
always faces west.
-
Literally, in many driver’s minds,
pedestrians have no rights, therefore, always be on the defensive
when trying to cross a street as you can be viewed like an
entertaining target by many a vehicle
-
Don’t believe traffic lights!. These
present no reason to let your guard down, so be aware of the
cars and not only of the lights.
Protection from the Sun
Being 8 to 10 degrees
from the equator presents a much more serious risk for acquiring
a flaming sunburn than further up the Northern Hemisphere. Take
precautions and use a hat or effective sunscreen when exposed
to the sun’s rays. The importance of this cannot be over-emphasized.
The concern is greater when you are at the beach or in the ocean
since salt and water are ideal reflectors.
Getting around
By
Bus: Microbuses Rapido (tel.238-8392 or 238-0506) offers
service to Heredia every 10 minutes from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., from
Calle 1, Avenidas 7/9 in San Jose. buses depart from Heredia for
San Jose from Avenida 4, Calle Central/1. Microbuses also depart
San Jose from Avenida 2, Calles 10/12, every 20 minutes, and hourly
midnight to 6 a.m.
By Taxi:
Taxis are found throughout the country and by US or European standards
are pretty inexpensive. Your standard taxi is red. Orange taxis
only work the international airport. All taxis should have a taxi
meter. If a "taxi" does not have a meter it is an illegal
taxi. Wait for a real taxi. When hoping in a taxi make sure the
driver uses the meter. If not, ask him to "use la maria".
If you are familiar with the area or the meter is broken negotiation
always works as well.
Note: after 10pm taxis will add an additional
20% to your fare. This is standard practice.
