Please note
that additional info (prices, activities, etc) are found to the
right of this pages.
When should you go? Anytime is fine, though we recommend that
you strongly consider going during the dry season. Staying dry
and warm is important, especially at higher altitudes.
Guided Tours
Many people make use of companies to help arrange
biking tours through Ecuador. If you find the right company, this
is an excellent option. These people know the best places to go,
will provide good equipment, set up accommodations, provide good
guides, plus much more. Looking around on the internet you can
find numerous companies offering these type of tours. If you do
decide to go this route, definitely ask to talk to people who
have participated on one of these tours.
Riding Solo
If you feel more adventurous you can always go
down to Ecuador and discover the country on your own. With proper
research and planning (and flexibility once you are in Ecuador)
this can be a wonderful experience.
Things To Think About
-
Get a good map of the country. You should
try to get some good ones prior to your departure. Maps can
also be purchased in Quito at the Instituto Geografico Militar.
-
GPS. Each year the cost of a GPS unit decreases.
You may be surprised how handy they can be once in Ecuador.
-
Try to stay of main highways and roads.
Right of way in much of Latin America is determined by size.
As a rider you will be at the bottom of the scale. Be aware
that most drivers are not accustomed to seeing bikers.
-
If you bring your own bike, make sure
it is a good one. The trails are extremely demanding in Ecuador.
If you rent, take a good look at what you are renting. That
great deal may not seem like such a good idea when you are
high up in the Andes and something breaks.
-
A good lock is essential. Even then, make
sure that you look up your bike in a secure area. If you don’t,
plan on walking.
-
Bring all the supplies you may need in
order to make on the road repairs.
-
First aid kit. Bring one.
-
This list is not meant to be comprehensive.
It should however start to get you thinking about what you
might need.
