A Little About The Humpback Whale
Some
have referred to the Humpback Whale as the singer of the ocean.
In the 1960’s researchers dropped a mic into ocean and discovered
the mesmerizing song of these incredible creatures. Since then
this sound has become familiar around the world. The song was
even included in the collection of sounds used for the Voyager
Spacecraft. Currently Humpbacks are found throughout the world’s
oceans. They are famous for their play, breeching and spyhopping.
The name of the whale does not come from any physical characteristics,
rather it comes from the way they dive. As they dive they have
been observed curving their backs and dropping their heads. This
is all done prior to brining their large flukes (tails) out of
the water.
The Humpback Whale is known to be a very social and active. They
are commonly found in groups of up to 8-10. Some whales have been
known to reach lengths of up to 65 feet and weigh close to 40
tons. While at first glance they may all look the same. On closer
observation there are distinguishing characteristics. It is however
the fluk that is the distinguishing mark of each of these whales.
No two whales have the same coloration of the fluk. While you
are in Ecuador take a picture of the whales you see. If one of
your photos shows a whale that has not been registered, then you
can give that whale a name! So keep you eyes open and your camera
ready.
If you have time to visit Ecuador during the
months of June through October you may want to consider visiting
the whales. It will be an experience of a lifetime!
