Bars and Discos
Quito's
nightlife ranges from serious salsa to raves, from classy English
style pubs to horrible karaoke beer troughs. In general, the bars
close at 2 or 3 o'clock. Discos are another story. There are several
discotecas that stay open until dawn. Bars and discos go in and
out of popularity fast so inquire locally for the latest list
of what's hot. Many places with music have a small cover charge,
a drink minimum, and a dress code. In addition to the many bars
with billiards, several places specialize in nothing else. Tables
are usually rented by the hour.

Casinos
Some of the more expensive
hotels have a Vegas wing for guests who are interested in gambling.
These gamerooms can be a fun and surprisingly inexpensive, if
you're careful and moderately lucky-way to spend an evening out.
Dress codes may be enforced. Try the casinos at the Hotel
Colón, the Swissotel,
or the Hotel Reina Isabela on
Amazonas and Veintimilla. In Old Town, you can place your bets
at the Hotel Real Alameda.
Latin Dancing
There are several clubs and
salsatecas in Quito where Cuban rhythms will set your toes tapping
and your hips swiveling. They occasionally have live music, too.
La Bodeguita de Cuba, Seseribó, Mayo and Cali Salsateca
are some of the popular salsatecas. Peñas and live folk
music happens at Nucanchi Peña,
Peña Dayumak.
Pubs
Quito's sizable population
of British, German, and North American immigrants supports a handful
of authentic taprooms. The Reina
Victoria Pub, is one of the most well known. Chosen as
one of the 22 best gathering places in the world by Newsweek,
it's been open since 1973. Relax with a Guinness in front of the
fireplace, or down a Newcastle between games of darts or pool.
A small restaurant serves sandwiches and light fare.
