A
large variety of traditional handicraft products can be found
in Antigua, where parents have taught their children to make
things with their hands for many generations, and so they have
perfected these traits through the centuries. Woodwork, ceramics,
scented candles, leather purses and hand-woven textiles from
San Antonio Aguas Calientes are an attraction , not only for
the regular tourist, but also for Spanish students.
The Spanish language school´s
effort is to rescue the tradition of craftsmanship in Antigua,
a job in which the local craftsman's associations are already
cooperating. Modern trends and technologies have produced a
severe change in the popular arts, and therefore many handicrafts
would be doomed to extinction if no effort is made to preserve
them. At the Spanish language school, the students will participate,
while learning Spanish, in the rescue of such arts, through
activities programmed by the Academy.
