Guatemala’s
beauty not only lies in its nature, climate and archaeological
and colonial splendor but also the people. Guatemalans are friendly
and hospitable and take pride in their culture, customs and traditions.
The official language of Guatemala is Spanish but over 40% of
the population speaks one of the 23 indigenous languages as the
primary language. About 60% of the population is mestizo and the
remaining is Indian. Through history, these people have continued
to use their native languages and have also maintained many of
their traditions and customs. Visitors will be fascinated by visiting
and experiencing the life of small indigenous communities.
The economy is based on agriculture with coffee,
fruit, sugarcane and spices being the main produce. Tourism is
also a source of revenue and the government has recently been
taking measures to promote tourism and harness the colonial and
archaeological resources. Fantastic archaeological sites, the
Mayan ruins, colonial monuments, the wildlife, breathtaking views
of the volcanoes along with cultural events, festivals and markets
draw thousands of visitors every year. The towns spring to life
during market days that feature merchants selling flowers, textiles,
handicrafts, silver, leather, woodcrafts and primitive-style oil
paintings of community life.
