| Deep Sea Fishing
While most people think of
Puerto Escondido in terms of surfing, many also know that the
town is a great jumping off point for some great deep sea fishing.
Some of the more common species of fish found in these waters
include: Dorado, tuna, sailfish, marlin, jack, pampano, tuna,
mahi mahi, and snapper to name just a few. Each day you will see
commercial boats, small fishermen on small boats, and a variety
of charter boats of all different sizes heading out to the ocean
to see what their luck will bring.
Two times a year Puerto Escondido
hosts large fishing tournaments. The Sailfish Tournament is held
in November and the Tuna Tournament is held in February. Both
are very popular.
Though surfing put Puerto on
the international map, it is by no means the sole local focal
point. Fishing is the life blood of the town. Deep sea commercial
boats, small family canoes, and every size and shape of boat in
between can be seen on the horizon as they bring in tuna, mahi
mahi, snapper, jack, marlin, and hundreds of other types of fish.
Many of the local boats welcome traveling fishermen and are available
for chartered trips to their favorite fishing spots. The catch
of the day can be either sold on the beach or taken to a beach
restaurant and grilled to your specifications. check out the fishing
section in Area Attractions.
Marine Tours
Not all the boats you see in
Puerto Escondido are used solely for fishing. Many boats are charted
to move up and down the coastline to enjoy the scenery, stop by
isolated beaches, etc. It is a great way to spend a half day or
full day when the weather is great.
