| The name Puerto Escondido
literally means "Hidden Port". For those people looking
for something on the beach, but not nearly as touristic as Acapulco
or Puerto Vallarta, look no further than Puerto Escondido. If
you are looking for beautiful beaches and world famous surfing,
Puerto Escondido is a great choice. It is also said that the town,
despite the increase of tourism in the area, still retains and
authentic style and charm of a Mexican fishing port.
The town of Puerto Escondido
is situated around a small rocky point which overlooks the Pacific
and the beautiful Zicatela beach area. The adoquin (the center
of town) is full of small shops, cafes, quaint hotels, bars, restaurants
and nightclubs. Puerto Escondido is still small enough so that
one can walk to most points of interest in a relatively short
period of time.
Please
note that additional info (prices, activities, etc) are found
to the right of this pages.
Besides Zicatela Beach there
are a number of other small beaches in the immediate area and
those include, Playa Principal, Marineros, Manzanillo, Puerto
Angelito, Carrizalillo and Bacocho. You will find swimmers, snorkelers,
boats and of course surfers in the area.
The main spot for experienced
surfers of course is Zicatela. The beach is home to miles of golden
sand, and just offshore is the famous Mexican Pipeline. Surfers
from all over the world come to this town to experience the surfing.
Puerto Escondido has been rated by some surf magazines as one
of the best surfing spots in the world. At certain times each
year one can find world class surfing competitions taking places.
Throughout the town there are an abundance of surf shops and local
guides ready and willing to help you out.
There are plenty of other things to do besides
hang out in and around the town. In the immediate area surrounding
Puerto Escondido you will find a mountainous region full of tropical
vegetation and exotic plants and animals. This region is well
known as one of Mexico's premier ecological areas. There are a
variety of tour operators in Puerto Escondido that can help arrange
trips for you to explore this wonderful region of Mexico.
Within a relatively short distance of Puerto
Escondido one also finds other interesting towns, villages, great
beaches, etc. Check with the Spanish language school for all of
the things you can do while in this wonderful town.
Getting to Puerto Escondido keeps getting easier
and easier. Currently there are flights from Mexico City and Oaxaca
to the town. Additionally Continental Airlines has a direct flight
to the town from the US. Bus service is also available from different
