| Puerto Escondido has a variety
of markets and shops where you can buy items of interest. While
there are some American style grocery stores, if you you want
to experience the feel of Mexico you need to go to the Mercado
Benito Juarez. Typical of most markets in Mexico, this is not
just a place to buy things you need, it is a social experience.
Please
note that additional info (prices, activities, etc) are found
to the right of this pages.
The Benito Juarez Market takes
up close to an entire city block. It is open 7 days a week. However
the best days to visit are the official market days which are
Wednesdays and Saturdays. People from the surrounding towns come
into Puerto Escondido and bring their items to sell.
The market is full so half
of the experience is just navigating through the various stalls
looking at the people and the items for sale. Even on on the slow
days there is plenty to look at or purchase. One area is dedicated
to vegetables and you will find stalls under tarps to keep the
produce fresh. In another area you will find places to purchase
Mexican cheese, meats, flowers, fish, coffee, seeds and more.
It is common to see women moving quickly through the market selling
tasty tamales and fresh hand made tortillas. You will also see
small restaurants in the market that sit no more than a couple
of people selling local cuisine. If you have time and want to
get a feel for Mexico, stop by this market. It is well worth your
time.
Down by the Harbor Beach you
will find the El Adoquin which is the pedestrian zone of Puerto
Escondido. This area is full of shops and restaurants and is another
great place to look around. If you are looking for handicrafts
this is the place to go. You will find everything ranging from
hammocks, to pottery, to shirts, to jewelry, plus much more. Browse
the shops, stop by the outdoor stalls, or check out what is being
sold on the street itself. This place is typically the busiest
during the late afternoons and early evenings. If you are looking
for a great place to spend your evening you will not be disappointed.
