| It is said that Puerto Escondido
was discovered by surfers during the mid 1970's. Shortly after
this "discovery" Puerto Escondido became known as one
of the best places in the world to go surfing. Each year surfers
from around the world come to this town to experience the "Mexican
Pipeline".

The main surfing area is just
of a beach known as Zicatela. The primary surf season runs from
April through October. During these months you can see surfers
enjoying 6-15 foot waves that break into beautiful tubes.
International competitions
are held on this beach 2 times per year.
When the Mexican Pipeline gets
too big for you, or you are not experienced enough try heading
down the beach to La Punta. This area is great for cruising, enjoying
much slower waves, etc. You will find that when the surf is more
mellow this is the spot where many recieve their first surfing
lesson.
If you have a car or want to
pay a taxi, you will find plenty of other great places to go surfing
up and down the coast. Hook up with some locals and they may show
you a killer secret spot. However you end up doing it, half the
fun is just exploring the new areas.
Even if you are not a surfer
it is a lot of fun to get some sun, enjoy a cold cerveza and watch
some great surfers carving up the waves. You may even find some
interesting people to watch or meet on the beach as well.
