If
two Scarlet Macaws move roughly in a straight line, Costa Rica
gamblers will likely place a bet on the winner. Almost every street
corner has a boy selling a lottery ticket for the National Lottery.
Inside virtually every major hotel you'll find a small casino.
Not exactly the Caesar's Palace with fancy blinking lights and
smoke-filled gambling houses of Las Vegas, but you'll find the
familiar sounds of roulette, craps, and blackjack as they continue
late into the night.
Rummy,
canasta (a type of roulette, with a basket containing balls replacing
the roulette wheel), craps, and tute ( a variant of poker
played locally) are the only casino games that are legal. Slot
machines are prohibited by law. Bingo is also popular in the outer
cosmopolitan area.
