| One
of the best things about Vejer is its accessibility to local beaches
while not being a 'beach' town (10km. away and no more than 10min.
by car). Beaches vary from long and wide to small sandy coves
where fresh water trickles on to the beach through the sandstone
cliffs above. But the best thing about any of the beaches is the
soft powdery sand. Vejer and its white sand beaches are quite
unblemished by any type of development. In fact this area is famous
in Spain for the 'virgin' quality of the beaches.
El
Palmar
Vejer's
closest family beach is a 12km (7m) stretch of golden sand. Thecenter
area has a few restaurants and some unobtrusive houses however
to the south and northern extremes inaccessible by car the cows
graze overlooking the dunes. Empty most of the year a perfect
place for laying, walking, or surfing. As an exposed beach it
is affected by strong winds.
Trafalgar
Bay
This is of course the scene
of the famous battle and where the 'Playa de las Almas' (the beach
of Souls) gained its name after the battle and as the bodies washed
up on the coast. Two beaches flank the promontory. The 'Almas'
beach is very exposed to dangerous currents while the 'Playa Trafalgar'
is protected.
Los
Caños
The beaches here are narrower
than most in the area but after passing the unsightly apartments
a line of stout palms overlooks the beach below. Well protected
from waves and currents and set in a natural cliff backed bay
this is a perfect family beach. The Breñas Nature Park
and some residential developments flank the beach. There is also
a nudist section to the far end under the cliffs.
Zahara
de los Atunes
This is the longest beach
in the area where the massive stretch of white sand is very accessible.
The inaccessible portion is property of the Ministry of Defense,
although the nearby barracks turn a blind eye in the summer to
Sunday beach goers. |
