Projeto Catarse (Maceio)

History/Purpose: A NGO that works with street children age This project is on helping infants and teenagers who live on the streets, drug addicts, homosexuals, etc.

The institution works in two different locations. The first location is their “house”, where they go to sleep protected from any harm. And the second house is where they learn a profession and work at the same time.

The goal of this institution is to recuperate the value of citizenship of these children. To achieve this goal, they get the children out of the streets, feed them, give them a place to stay, teach them a job, give them information on hygiene, civil rights, etc., so they can be returned to the society better formed.

Placement: Teaching English, hygiene, civil rights, counseling and assisting with school work.
Work Schedule: Varies
Location: In the Jacintinho neighborhood, which is 15 minutes distant by bus from Ponta Verde neighborhood, in Maceio.
Lodging: Homestay, pousada or apartment.
Requirements:
Minimum age: 24 years.
Minimum commitment: 4 weeks
Minimum Portuguese level: Low Beg.
Experience working with street children
Lots of patience, energy, and creativity!
Important Things To Consider:
This placement can be very difficult. The children have emotional and/or behavioral problems, sometimes severe. The volunteers have to be open minded and should not expect a list of tasks to be done. Instead, the organization will welcome suggestions/ideas, volunteers might have in order to develop their work and or achieve the organization’s goals.

Centro Ere (Maceio)

History/Purpose: A NGO that works with street children age This organization works on helping infants and teenagers who live on the streets, drug addicts, homosexuals, etc. Additionally this organization also works in a favela (poor neighborhood). They maintain a small school in this place where, in the mornings they work with the children and teach health care, hygiene and other basic things. In the evenings, they work with adults, usually the children’s parents, and teach them basic notions of citizenship (rights and duties)
Placement: Depends on the volunteers’ skills and interests. Possible areas include the teaching of basic English, hygiene, civil rights, counseling and assisting with school work
Work Schedule: Varies. Arranged upon arrival.
Location of Placement: In the “vila brejal” neighborhood, which is 20 minutes distant by bus from Ponta Verde neighborhood, in Maceio.
Lodging: Homestay, pousada or apartment.
Requirements
Minimum age: 24 years.
Minimum commitment: 4 weeks
Minimum Portugese level: High beginner
Volunteers should be creative enough to teach activities using readily available materials such as newspaper, cardboard, cans, etc.
Any kind of creative art or music knowledge is helpful.
Important Things To Consider:
There are very few resources for the classes.
Flexibility and creativity a must!

Terto Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo)

History/Purpose: A non-profit social and human institution devoted to develop programs to enhance the conditions of those people in need in the developing worlds biggest city. Works with single mothers and their children.
Placement: Teaching courses focused on personal growth and self-esteem increase, civil rights, counseling and assisting with school work.
Work Schedule: Varies
Location: Several Locations in the city of São Paulo
Lodging: Homestay, pousada or apartment.
Requirements:
Minimum age: 24 years.
Minimum commitment: 4 weeks
Minimum Portuguese level: Low Beg.
