| Puerto
Rico is famous for the many colorful celebrations held on this
island. Probably the most important festivals are the ones associated
with Patron Saints which are known as Fiestas Patronales.
If you are in Puerto Rico during one of these
festivals you are in for a treat! It is a great way to experience
the local culture. Associated with these festivals are food, drinks,
live music, religious processions, and games and rides.
Please note
that additional info (prices, activities, etc) are found to the
right of this pages.
Each town has a different patron saint, and the
activities associated with the Patron Saint festivals vary from
town to town. What really makes the festivals interesting are
the many culturals that have influenced them including Indian,
African and Spanish cultures. One of the more interesting festivals
takes place in San Juan and is called El Dia de San Juan Bautistata
(Festival of St John the Baptist). At midnight, thousands of people
line the beaches and then walk backwards into the water. This
is done seven times and the purpose is to ensure good luck for
the coming year. If you find yourself in Puerto Rico during one
of these festivals, take an opportunity to check it out.
Another celebration is the Puerto Rico Danza
Week. During this week there are many events celebrating Puerto
Rico's rich culture of danza and danza music. Originally a past
time of the Spanish wealthy, today danza and the danze music are
a part of all Puerto Rican society.
In November Puerto Rico plays host to an International
Film Festival. Well over 100 films are presented each year during
the festival. Press, directors, actors and fans from all over
the world come to participate in this exciting event.
in early July of each year Puerto Rico offers
the Festvial de la Bahia. This is a popular musical event that
is very popular with visitors and locals. It is held in the heart
of San Juan.
The above are just a few of the many different
celebrations and festivals held in Puerto Rico each year.
