| Puerto
Rico is a relatively small island, roughly comparable in size
to the state of Connecticut. Despite its small size, Puerto Rico
has a rich and varied culture. Today the island is home to roughly
4 million people.
The Taino culture was the first major influence
felt on Puerto Rico. It was however the arrival of the Spanish
and their subsequent influence that really influenced the culture
of Puerto Rico.

Upon arrival the Spanish put the local Taino
to work, however due to horrible conditions and disease most of
the indigenous population was decimated.
To make up for a lack of laborers, the Spanish
began to utilize African slaves.
Later
Puerto Rico saw people from other Caribbean islands begin to move
to the island in search of job opportunities.
Over the centuries this influx and influence
of different peoples has come together to make Puerto Rico what
it is today: An island rich in history and culture. This mix of
cultures is felt in festivals, food, traditions, the language,
and much more. You cannot travel in Puerto Rico without picking
up on the influences of so many diverse peoples.
It is this mix of peoples and the culture it
created that helps to make Puerto Rico such a special place to
visit.
