FOOD: SAN SEBASTIAN
San
Sebastian is the center of the new Basque cuisine. Seafood is,
of course, one of the main ingredients in traditional dishes using
sea bream and hake cheeks. Chick-peas, garbanzo beans, asparagus,
olive oil, garlic, corn, rice and regional cheeses are common
ingredients blended with sauces and spices mixed with meat like
lamb, pork beef or poultry to create amazing mouthwatering dishes.
San Sebastian has a multitude of "Caserones",
villa style houses/restaurants where they serve typical Basque
cuisine based on their rich gastronomic traditions. Breakfast
is usually served around 9:30am, lunch is served between
2:00 and 3:00 pm followed by a long siesta, and finally dinner
in only after 9:00 pm.
San Sebastian makes several famed wines and they are usually had
with meals. The prices for these wines range from affordable to
very expensive. Apple cider and 'Txakoli,' a dry white wine are
the most popular drinks.
