What
better than to sit beneath the shade of a beach umbrella, sip
a cool drink and watch the time pass as the sun slowly makes
its way accross the beautiful blue sky: the most popular activity
on the islands. You don't have to look very hard for more active
pastimes. The islands lend themselves to plenty of cycling,
and bikes are readily available. The country is fine for hiking,
and the coastal conditions for surfing and windsurfing are fabulous.
The Bahía de Pozo Izquierdo is the best beach on Gran
Canaria for windsurfing. Swimming is generally better in summer,
as the Atlantic has powerful swells during the winter months.
Scuba divers or snorkellers might see rays, grouper, barracuda,
turtles, tropical fish and the occasional shark. Deep sea fishing
and sailing are good for those with a little more money to spend,
and the fishing off Gran Canaria is very good.
