The Caves Of Nerja
These amazing caves were discovered by small
boys in 1959 who in the process of chasing bats discovered the
entrance to this series of limestone caverns.
The Caves of Nerja are well preserved and are
full of prehistoric painting of human and animal figures on the
cave walls. Archaeologists estimate that these caves were inhabited
off an on between 20,000 BC to 1,800 BC.
As a visitor you will have the chance to explore
many different archaeological finds and underground chambers.
Some of the more interesting caverns include the Hall of Bethlehem,
full of stalagmites and stalactites, the Hall of the Waterfall
which is used for the Festival of the Caves, and the Hall of the
Cataclysm. The Hall of the Cataclysm is interesting due to the
fact that it has the tallest column found in any cave complex
in the world. The column was formed by the joining of a stalactite
and a stalagmite.
