Palacio Salvo
One of the more prominent landmarks in Montevido,
the Palacio Salvo is often called the "Symbol of Montevideo".
In the past, the 26 story building was once the tallest building
in South America.
Cathedral
Built in 1804, this Cathedral has been an important
part of the history of Montevideo. Many of the famous or important
figures of Uruguay's history reside in this structure.
Teatro Solis
Completed in the early 1850''s this is the opera
house for Montevideo. Renovated the Teatro Solis current hosts
the country's most important cultural events. The site is also
home to the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural.
Town Hall
An important history building. It was in this
building the the constitution was written and signed. Later the
building was used as a city jail (19th century), and today is
home to a museum.
El Museo de Bellas Artes
If you want to get a feel for the artistic heritage
of Urugay, stop by this national art museum. You can see paintings,
sculptures, documents and much more. Many of the most important
Uruguayan artists are housed in this museum.
Plaza Independencia
The plaza resides on the site of the old Spanish
citadel. The plaza is a great spot to begin your exploration of
Montevideo, and in particular, the Old City.
